Celtic Heritage - Hela'r Twrch Trwyth
Composer/performer John Kenny and Welsh artist Sean Harris combine music from across celtic nations, animation and story-telling to bring us a mythical Welsh tale in a unique arts performance.
The Carnyx is one of the most famous instruments used throughout prehistoric celtic Europe, and is a form of ceremonial war horn. The Deskford Carynx, discovered on the banks of the Moray Firth, Aberdeenshire in 1816, is the finest example so far discovered of this most powerful wind instrument of the ancient world.
In 1992 John Kenny was invited to join a team of specialists at the National Museum of Scotland committed to reconstruct the Deskford Carnyx. In 1993 he became the first person to play the carnyx for 2000 years, and has since lectured and performed on the instrument internationally, in concert halls, and on radio, television, and film.
The evening will feature stunning music on the carynx, and other traditional horns, combined with a multi-media performance.
This narrated animation, with characters created by children, tells one of the heroic stories from The Mabinogion and features archaeological treasures and fieldwork from Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales, National Museum of Ireland and National Museums of Scotland.
